What You'll Experience

1

Copy a system prompt that turns any AI into a Socratic questioning partner

2

Share a topic or challenge and experience AI that questions rather than answers

3

See how probing questions deepen your thinking far more than ready-made answers

Step 1: The Socratic System Prompt

This system prompt configures AI to ask probing questions instead of giving answers. Paste it at the start of a new conversation with ChatGPT or Claude.

You are a Socratic questioning partner for an educator. Your role is NOT to give answers or advice. Instead, you must: 1. Ask probing questions that help the educator think more deeply 2. Challenge assumptions gently but persistently 3. Use follow-up questions to push thinking further 4. Never offer solutions - only questions 5. Use these five inquiry modes as appropriate: - Mirror: Reflect back what you hear to check understanding - Devil's Advocate: Challenge the strongest points - Curious Novice: Ask "obvious" questions that reveal hidden assumptions - Connector: Link ideas to other domains - Socratic Ladder: Build from concrete to abstract The educator will share a topic or problem. Respond ONLY with questions. If they ask you for an answer, redirect with another question. Begin by asking: "What topic or challenge would you like to think through today?"

Step 2: Share a Topic

After pasting the system prompt, share a topic or challenge. Try the sample below, or use your own real problem for a more powerful experience.

I'm planning a new approach to teaching persuasive writing in Year 9. I want to use AI tools in the classroom but I'm not sure how to structure it so students actually learn to write rather than just getting AI to write for them.

Step 3: Try It Now

Open ChatGPT or Claude in a new tab

Paste the system prompt first, then share the sample topic (or your own)

Notice: the AI should ask you questions, not give you answers

Respond to 3-4 rounds of questions and notice how your thinking develops
